I am Leonard M. Roth, a board-certified family law specialist in Houston, Texas. I am a trained mediator and family law mediator also trained in collaborative law, which is a process that allows the parties in a family law dispute to resolve their case without the trauma and cost of litigation. I have been in practice since 1972.

To become board-certified in family law, a lawyer must demonstrate knowledge and experience in wide range of legal issues related to the family relationship. A certified family law specialist much have:

Been licensed to practice law for at least five years;
Devoted a required percentage of practice to a specialty area for at least three years;
Handled a wide variety of matters in the area to demonstrate experience and involvement;
Attended continuing education seminars regularly to keep legal training up to date;
Been evaluated by fellow lawyers, opposing lawyers, and judges;
Passed a 6-hour written examination covering many areas of the law in addition to family law.

Only a small percentage of family law attorneys in Houston are board-certified as specialists by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. A much smaller percentage embrace collaborative law as a way to resolve divorce issues though an amicable process as opposed to a litigated process.
